International Workshop on Water Reuse Schemes:
Opportunities, Problems and Solutions
WOPAS2012 29th and 30th of March 2012
Heraklion, Crete, Greece
Welcome to Wopas 2012,
Wastewater reuse is increasingly becoming a major alternative water resource, with agriculture still being the main final recipient. Legislation is constantly improving, to match the technological advances within the treatment technology sector, especially regarding tertiary treatment and purification. However, the design, implementation and operation of wastewater reuse schemes isfar from an easy process.
Issues like cost, social acceptance, health risks, effects on crops and soil, management schemes and most importantly the issues of pricing and consumption control can easily turn a promising process into a local disaster. For this reason, it is essential for all people involved in similar projects and applications, to interact, exchange experiences and ideas, not just regarding the theoretical approach but the practical, day to day reality.
PURE (www.pure-hersonissos.gr) is a project, funded by 50% by EU, aiming in turning a wastewater distribution system into a state of the art water reuse scheme. Two years after the project’s initiation, the international workshop aims in exchanging the experience developed through the PURE project, with similar experiences from other places in the globe. WOPAS2012, aims in reducing the risks related to the implementation of wastewater reuse schemes and in increasing their effectiveness, targeting mainly people that are or will be responsible for the design and implementation of such processes.
